Chapter 4: Urban Flight
While
Alyx is yelling for help, begin searching through the box-filled room.
You'll find some supplies and an orange crank. Pick it up and pull it
over to the empty orange slot on the wall 1.
Once you've installed the crank, open up the metal screen and get a
nice of view of City 17. Make your way through the city. As you begin
your trek through a narrow alleyway, those some spotter robots will find
you, then soldiers will rappel down the buildings to attack. Make sure
you grab a SMG when the battle is over. The alleyway exits into a large
courtyard. Block the antlion boroughs with some scattered cars, but
don't let the soldiers overrun you. At the end of the road, there is a
blocked door 2. Clear it and open it up.
There are soldiers inside, but you can take care of them by shooting
the trip-mines they've set up. This will start a fire that blocks your
way up the stairs. There is a nozzle in the backroom that controls the
gas flow to the fire.
The only way to reach it is to jump from the long set of pipes that
are near the ledge, but you'll find that the pipes act like a
teeter-totter, and drop down as you put weight near the edge 3.
The easiest way to solve the puzzle is to grab a box of some sort, and
place underneath the fulcrum. Once the box is set, run across the pipes
and jump to the ledge 4. Turn off the
gas and meet Alyx back in the main room. Head up the stairs. A crawling
zombie will activate a trip mine, so stay back until the explosion is
over. Use the rollermine in the room to help you fight all the zombies.
After the room is clear, go down the stairs at the other side of the room. A sniper will pin you down 5.
Get Alyx to reprogram a rollermine and then dodge your way across the
open space until you can launch the mine into the window. There are some
supplies near the doorway; grab them if the sniper gets some shots in.
Alyx will take over the sniper position. Climb up the ladder she unlocks
for you, and head to the other side of the barricade. Zombies and
zombines will come at you from the left. Bring them out into the open so
Alyx can help you, but drop the zombines before they pull out their
grenades. Once the yard is clear, head up the stairs. There is a
poisoncrab hidden in the closet, kill it and take the supplies. In the
hallways, pull the boards off the windows so Alyx can take the zombies
out before they get close to you.. Once you exit the building, pull off
the metal sheet that is covering the combine gunner, the quickly cover
up the antlion boroughs. Alyx will catch up to you. When the combine
gates up open, rush in and take the soldiers out. Head into the building
they were blocking. Soldiers will rush you from the end of the hallway.
After you've killed them, stock up from their barracks. When the
doors begin to beep, be ready, more soldiers will enter. Having a
grenade waiting for them is a great tactic, and will save you lots of
ammo. Proceed through the building until you find the exit. There is a
large courtyard waiting at the end of the building. An antlion guard is
engaged in battle with combine forces. You'll be able to watch for a
bit, but be prepared for a fight 6. Keep
your distance, and try to dodge its devastating head-butts. Block all
the boroughs after you've killed the guard. Alyx will cover you with the
mounted gun. Rush through the combine blockade and kill any soldiers
that are defending it. Go through the gash in the road and enter the
small room at the end. There is a hopper waiting for you, so walk with
caution. Try to clear the room of explosives from afar. Enter the vent,
and crawl through.
If you turn right, the vent will collapse, and you'll have to start
over again. Head straight through the vent. When it collapses again,
move slowly. Pull the cover off and dispose of it carefully; you'll see
why when you exit the vent. Move to the back corner, then use jumps and
crouching to make your way to the elevator. It will fall as well. Remove
the cover on ceiling of the elevator, then swim up to the surface. Be
careful, as some barnacles may have appeared. Clear out the bottom room
from afar by blasting one of the explosive barrels. There is a
poisoncrab in the next room, kill it before you hop through the window.
Position a barrel in front of the vent, and crawl through. When you exit
the vent, clear the next room of the barrels and tripmines you
crawled/jumped through 7. Jump across
the elevator shaft, and climb the ladder that leads to the top. Enter
the vent at the top and make your way through. Before you drop down from
the vent, clear away any barrels you see, then watch for hoppers.
Active the power-box and meet up with Alyx. Stock up on supplies from
any lockers you come across. You'll come to another door that will begin
to beep and flash. Once again, have grenades ready for the soldiers
that are behind the opening. Grab any weapons (look for the crossbow),
ammo, and power-ups you need, the remove the power plug in the corner of
the room, this will shut down the field you passed by earlier.
You'll enter another large outdoor area. Rappelling soldiers will
appear, and the door at bottom of the road will blast open and release
more soldiers into the area. Once you've fought them all, head over to
the resistance fighter that is waving at you. He'll lead you into an
apartment building. Make your way up the stairs until a headcrab missile
blocks your path. Pull the wood off the door behind you and kill the
zombines waiting inside. When you enter the larger room around the
corner, proceed slowly as the floor will collapse 8, leaving you to deal with zombies below.
If you do fall through, make your way back up and eventually you'll
find Barney. He'll release a bridge for you and return your crowbar 9.
Watch for headcrabs and zombines throughout the next building. There
are lots of zombie and combine forces to fight, and a gunship circling
the building. The ship will attack you if you stay visible long enough,
so stay crouched as much as you can. Eventually you'll end up in a
large, broken-down roof/attic area. The gunship will destroy as many
panels and boards as it needs in order to find you. There is a rocket
launcher on the floor, and a rocket crate on the top. Guide your
missiles through the panels (though there will be less as the gunship
destroys them) until you've destroyed the ship.
Before you can have a good look at the gunship's remains, the door in
the attic will blow open, allowing more soldiers in. Proceed through
the door after you've killed the soldiers, but be careful of hoppers and
tripmines. You're now back in the hospital. There are many zombies and
soldiers to fight as you progress through the halls. Always check the
side rooms for supplies, but look out for ambushes. When you come to an
area that you have to drop through the broken floor to access 10, hop down, then tumble as the ground completely gives away.
You'll end up underwater. Swim to the to right hand side of the room,
eventually you'll come up to a pathway. There are some poisoncrabs
waiting in the small shed, so get rid of them 11
before you hop in to get to the other end of the room. Look out for
barnacles in the room; get rid of them as you go, or they'll just be a
hassle later. At the far end of the room there is a power switch 12. Don't turn it on until you have propped up the teeter-totter pathway.
There is a blue barrel near the locked door at the opposite end of
the room. It floats in water, so use to prop the broken pathway 13.
Once the broken pathway is stable, turn on the switch. More barnacles
let down their traps, so be careful; they will be directly in your path.
Jump from the pathway you just fixed to the small piece in the middle
of the water 14.
From there, jump to the pipelines running in front of the shed 15.
Leap back into the shed, then walk to the door, which is now open. Alyx
will return to your side. Beneath you is a hulk; kill him and all the
poisoncrabs he releases. There may be quickcrabs as well. Hop down and
kill all the zombies and zombines that enter the room, and the ones in
the surrounding hallways. Exit into the small clinic 16, take any supplies you need from the cabinets.
Sentry guns guard the hallway across from you. You need to advance
quickly towards the end of the hall. Dart from column to column in order
to avoid being shredded. Zombies of all sorts will attack you from the
side rooms, but Alyx and the sentry guns should be able to handle them.
Once you get close enough, pull the power plug out of the socket so you
can proceed.
