Team Fortress 2 is a stand alone team based multiplayer game built on
Valve’s Source engine. There are two teams in the game, Red and Blu.
During each round the two teams compete to achieve objectives which
differ depending on the game mode.
During the Capture the Flag maps, teams will attempt to infiltrate
the opposing team’s base, steal the intelligence briefcase, and bring it
back to their base while at the same time protecting their own
briefcase. If a player dies while carrying the opposing team’s
briefcase, the briefcase will fall to the ground and stay until it is
either recaptured by the opposing team, or is stolen again. Recaptures
are not instant, and require one or more of the owning team to stay in
the vicinity of the briefcase for a certain period of time before the
briefcase returns to the owning team’s intelligence room.
In the Control Point and Territorial Control maps teams fight to gain
control of certain areas of the map by occupying control points in a
linear or nonlinear fashion respectively. Control points are captured by
one or more members of a team standing within the boundaries of a
control point without a member of the opposing team crossing the
boundary. The time it takes to secure a control point decreases as the
amount of same side players within the control point boundaries
increases.
Added in a later content patch, Valve blessed fans with a new
gameplay mode, Payload. The first of the maps, pl_goldrush, was arguably
one of the greatest levels ever created by man for any game, in the
history of humankind. The Payload gameplay mode pits the two teams, Red
and Blu, in an eternal struggle between the movement of a cart along
preset tracks along the map. One team's objective is to push the cart
against a hailstorm of enemy rockets and bullets through each
checkpoint; eventually ending up at the last one, where the cart pushing
team will win the game. It is up to the opposing team to stop the cart
from moving forward at any time, prolonging their inevitable doom. Once
the cart is pushed to the last checkpoint, something blows up, and the
teams progress to a new part of the map.
Also added in another content patch, was the Arena mode. It's
essentially Counter-Strike, but with Team Fortress 2 models and guns.
Instead of respawning after your death, you have to wait for the round
to end. There is no point to Arena, other than killing the other team,
which is delicious. Who cares about stupid objectives, anyways?
There are nine classes to choose from: Sniper, spy, heavy, scout,
demoman, pyro, engineer, medic, and soldier. Each class has one or more
weapons unique to their class, as well attributes and abilities such as a
faster running speed or the ability to disguise themselves as a member
of the opposing team. The separate classes are designed in such a way as
to make teamwork in either a supportive, defensive, or offensive role
vital to securing mission objectives.
